Magnesium and calcium are fundamental nutrients that need to be in balance with each other in order for you to fully experience good health. Their importance on a cellular level is critical. Calcium and magnesium are like opposite sides of a coin. Calcium excites nerves, while magnesium calms them down. Calcium makes muscles contract. Magnesium is necessary for muscles to relax. Calcium is needed for blood clotting, but magnesium keeps the blood flowing freely.

Calcium & Magnesium: A Matter of Balance

You experience the tensing (calcium) and relaxing (magnesium) interaction of these two elements each time your heart beats, when you feel your pulse and every time you breathe.

When we are under stress, our cells—which in their resting state contain magnesium—go through a change. Calcium, normally outside the cells, enters the cells and the calcium level becomes high. This is the action state in which a muscle cell, for example, will contract and tense the muscle. The magnesium then pushes the calcium out of the cell and the cell is again in its resting, relaxed state. Think of it as an on-off switch. The “off” is magnesium and the “on” is calcium.

But what happens to a cell that is not in balance—where the magnesium level in the body is deficient?

In simple terms, the “off” switch doesn’t fully turn off. That means calcium can continuously leak into the cells and stimulate cell activity (the “on” switch). The result is stress accompanied by one or more of the magnesium deficiency symptoms.

Magnesium helps your muscles and nerves function properly; it keeps your heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system and also assists in keeping your bones strong. This essential mineral helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure and is required for producing and storing energy. It’s easy to see why many researchers say that no single dietary factor is as critical as magnesium.

Calcium—Too Much of a Good Thing?

Calcium deficiency can be a serious issue. It is an important nutrient your body needs every day, but too much calcium can also be a problem. Unassimilated calcium can end up in the soft tissues of the body where it deposits and hardens (calcifies) or in the urine where it may result in kidney stones.

Unless calcium and magnesium are properly balanced, magnesium becomes depleted (too much calcium can itself deplete magnesium levels). This can result in an inability to quickly recover from stress and can itself be a source of stress.

Do You Have a Healthy Magnesium Level?

Most people don’t get enough magnesium, including many who already take magnesium. There are two reasons for this: the amount of magnesium required by the body is greater than people think and many magnesium capsules and tablets are not completely absorbed by the body.

Magnesium deficiency can be caused by a number of stresses on the body, including—but not limited to—lack of adequate dietary magnesium, emotional stress, some drugs (diuretics, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, insulin, cortisone), heavy exercise, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders and too much calcium in the diet.

Symptoms of Magnesium Depletion

According to www.frequencyspecific.com:

Frequency Specific Microcurrent (FSM) is an exciting new way of treating nerve and muscle pain and many other conditions using specific frequencies and micro amperage current. There are hundreds of practitioners in the U.S., Australia and Canada using FSM to create miraculous changes in patients to reduce pain and improve health. Most of the time, FSM produces immediate dramatic changes in tissue that make it an indispensable tool in treating pain and many other health concerns.

What is Microcurrent?

Micro current is current in millionths of an ampere. An ampere is a measure of the movement of electrons past a point. Microamperage current is the same kind of current your body produces on its own within each cell. This is current in millionths of an ampere. It is very small, and there isn’t enough current to stimulate sensory nerves so you cannot feel the current flow.

Microcurrent History

Microcurrent was first used in the 1980s by physicians in Europe and the U.S. for stimulating bone repair in non-union fractures. There are numerous studies published on the effects of microcurrent showing that it increases the rate of healing in wounds and fractures.

What can FSM treat?

FSM is especially effective at treating nerve and muscle pain, inflammation and scar tissue. There is a kind of fibromyalgia associated with spine trauma that is particularly painful and difficult to treat. There is one frequency combination, and only one frequency combination, that has been observed to eliminate pain in patients with this condition. Shingles responds very well to only one frequency combination that eliminates the pain in 20 minutes and causes the lesions to dry up and disappear in approximately two to three days. There is one frequency combination that so far has been 100% effective in eliminating kidney stone pain. This frequency combination does nothing to remove the stone; it only eliminates the pain. The frequencies have created observed effects in asthma, liver dysfunction (reducing elevated liver enzymes), irritable bowel and many other conditions. It has been observed that patients who are treated within four hours of a new injury, including auto accidents and surgeries, have much reduced pain and a greatly accelerated healing process.

Conditions Which Have Reported Benefits with FSM:

Achilles tendonitis
Adhesions
Asthma
Back pain
Bell’s palsy
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH)

FSM Results

Some patients have reported significant benefits immediately after or within 24 hours following a single FSM session. These reported benefits can be permanent; or they may last between four days to a week, with the duration of benefit lasting longer with each subsequent FSM session. Other patients, particularly those with long-standing symptoms, have reported benefits after six treatments. Though early intervention generally enhances favorable outcomes with FSM, good outcomes have also been observed when using FSM for long-standing symptoms, even when other treatments have failed.

Frequencies and the Development of FSM

In the early 1900s, before 1934, medical physicians and osteopaths were using electromagnetic therapy devices and frequencies to treat patients. There were thousands of physicians using these therapies to treat patients and doing research and sharing the effects of frequencies in articles and books. The Electromedical Society and its journal, Electromedical Digest were founded by Dr. Albert Abrams, a medical physician in San Francisco. In 1934, the American Medical Association (AMA) decreed that electromagnetic therapies were “unscientific” and that drugs and surgery were the accepted tools of medicine and anyone using electromagnetic therapies would lose their license to practice, which at the time was granted by the AMA. Electromagnetic treatments and research gradually declined. The equipment stopped being manufactured and, by the mid-1950s, was removed from the market by the FDA. The frequencies were still available in books and articles and in the manuals that came with the old devices.

In 1994 Carolyn McMakin, DC, began using frequencies obtained from Dr. Harry Van Gelder, a retired osteopath, on her family and on volunteer patients and friends. Once it was determined that a frequency producing no benefit also produced no harm, they were used on Dr. McMakin’s chiropractic patients to see if any positive effects could be observed. The results were immediate and fascinating. The frequencies appeared to do exactly what they were alleged to do. The frequency said to “decrease inflammation” reduced redness and swelling but had no other effect. The frequency to “reduce scar tissue” increased range of motion and softened tissue but had no effect on inflammation, redness or swelling. The frequency to stop bleeding reduced bleeding in the menses and reduced or eliminated bruising if used immediately after an injury or surgery, but had no effect on inflammation, scar tissue or range of motion. Eventually frequencies were added from the writings of Dr. Albert Abrams and from a list obtained from Dr. McWilliams.

After treating patients and observing these effects for over a year, Dr. McMakin first taught the technique in January 1997 to determine whether the effects were reproducible. Did the technique actually have a real effect or was this some apparent effect produced by the patient’s mind or reaction to something else in the clinic environment? By June 1997, it was apparent that students were achieving the same results as Dr. McMakin, especially in the treatment of myofascial pain from trigger points. In 1998, frequency combinations were first used to successfully treat nerve pain such as sciatica caused by disc injuries. Only one frequency combination was effective in reducing nerve pain. In 1999 one frequency combination was found to eliminate the full body pain associated with fibromyalgia caused by spine trauma. Those cases were published in 2005 in a peer reviewed article titled, “Cytokine changes in fibromyalgia associated with cervical trauma.” Classes continue to be taught around the U.S. and in Ireland so that practitioners can bring these effects and the relief they achieve to patients.

_Heart disease, including stroke, is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. You are at higher risk of heart disease if you are:
• A woman age 55 or older
• A man age 45 or older
• Or a person with a family history of early heart disease

Heart disease can be prevented. To keep your heart healthy:
• Watch your weight.
• Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
• Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
• If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
• Get active and eat healthy.
• Talk to your doctor about taking aspirin every day if you are a man over the age of 45 or a woman over 55.
• Manage stress.

How Vitamin D Protects Your Heart
A new study has linked a lack of sunshine, the body's most natural source of vitamin D, to the prevalence of cardiovascular disease.

Factors that affect sunlight, and therefore vitamin D production, are tied to a patient's cardiovascular risks. In other words, the more sunlight you get, the better your cardiovascular health will be. These factors can include time of year, altitude and geographical location.

There are a number of physiological mechanisms triggered by vitamin D production through sunlight exposure that act to fight heart disease, according to the study:

-An increase in the body's natural anti-inflammatory cytokines.
-The suppression of vascular calcification.
-The inhibition of vascular smooth muscle growth.

Dr. Patricia Kane
In 2007 I stumbled across a body work for detoxification called the PK Protocol. At the time I was in residency, so I didn't have the ability to learn more about, or utilize the program. But now things have changed. Please allow me to share...

The PK Protocol aids in regeneration of the cell membrane to treat neurotoxicity in order to treat the following:
-ALS, Motor Neuron Disease
-Alzheimer’s
-Anti-Aging, Longevity
-Autism and Developmental Delay
-Cancer
-Cardiovascular Disease
-Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
-Environmental Illness
-Epilepsy
-Infertility
-Heavy metal detoxification
-Hepatitis C
-Huntington’s Disease
-Hyperlipidemia (elevated cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides)
-Inherited Metabolic Disorders
-Lyme Disease
-Mold Toxicity
-Multiple Sclerosis
-NeuroLyme
-PANDAS
-Parkinson’s
-Post Stroke
-Neurotoxicity
-Pesticide/Chemical Poisoning
-Seizures

How The Protocol Is Implemented:
  1. The patient comes into the office for a blood draw for the following tests: blood chemistry and Red Blood Cell Analysis, which is sent to the Kennedy Kreiger Institute for an in-depth analysis.
  2. Your blood test results will then be sent to BodyBio for analysis that includes screening for Cardiac Risk, Cellular Distortion, Electrolyte Stability, Gastrointestinal Function, Hematology, Hepatic Function, Immune Status, Lipid Metabolism, Muscular Involvement, Nitrogen Retention, Psychological Stability, Physiological Stability, Pulmonary Function, Renal Function and Toxicity Status. Each of these systems will be reviewed to isolate the areas requiring intervention.
  3. You will then receive a personalized Fatty Acid Report, Fatty Acid Analysis, IV Protocol and Nutrient Protocol--recommendations for supplements such as electrolytes, minerals, enzymes, fatty acids, vitamins and amino acids. These protocols are tailored to you to address your specific needs.
  4. You will meet with Dr. DeLuca to review your reports and protocols and receive a personalized treatment plan.

The Patricia Kane (PK) Protocol and BodyBio Testing
BodyBio Inc. is one of only a few organizations in the world that has been able to keep pace with the available medical research on the implications of nutrition on functions and disorders. Even more importantly, BodyBio has developed proven methods (our diagnostic BodyBio Reports) to bridge the knowledge gap between applied nutritional research, health care practitioners and patients interested in nutrition as a component of their health care.

The PK -Membrane Stabilizing- Protocol for Neurological Disorders

Background: The lipid soluble nature of toxicity has led us to seize the complexity of neurological presentations by addressing them from a cell membrane perspective. Examination of red cell lipids and identification of nuclear DNA adducts as chemicals, pesticides, microbials and metals in subjects with Motor Neuron Disease, Autism, Multiple Sclerosis, Post Stroke, Epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease over the past eleven years in 9000 analyses has revealed a characteristic accumulation of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), which comprise lipid rafts, or ceramides, revealing cell membrane derangement. Membrane phospholipid abnormalities with elevation of VLCFAs may be indicative of exposure to fat soluble neurotoxins resulting in suppressed peroxisomal beta oxidation of VLCFAs. Disturbances in methylation due to toxic exposure may destabilize the membrane phospholipid structure and alter DNA expression due to deficits in the enzymes Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) and Methionine Synthase.

Objective: The use of oral and IV lipids may facilitate stabilization of phospholipids in cellular membranes thereby addressing cell membrane integrity. The addition of intravenous phenylbutrate addresses neuroinflammation by increasing the beta oxidation of VLCFAs.

Procedure: To clear the bioaccumulation of toxins and stabilize membrane function we have embarked on a clinical treatment plan for the past five years to address the accumulation of aberrant lipids and ceramides with oral and IV phenylbutyrate, bolus intravenous phosphatidylcholine as Essentiale, methylation factors (folinic acid, riboflavin, methylcobalamin, tetrahydrobiopterin), and sulfation support (IV Glutathione).

Results: We have noted significant and sustained clinical neurological improvement within the first few weeks after initiation of oral and intravenous treatment in our patient population of 300 subjects.

Conclusion: The administration of Phosphatidylcholine, Leucovorin/Folinic acid, Glutathione and Phenylbutyrate may offer a new therapeutic strategy for neurological disorders involving neurotoxic exposure.

So you might be thinking: how can one treatment regimen work on so many different diseases? While there are a few root causes of acquired disease --among them toxins, infections and trauma-- the final common pathways of disease are all due to cellular damage and dysfunction. This can happen at the cell membrane, the DNA, or the mitochondria (some of you may have to harken back to high school biology class). So, very briefly, what the PK Protocol does is remove the accumulated toxins in and on the cells and introduces back the raw materials to repair the membranes. That process allows function to be restored. This is a very simple, yet profoundly complicated process. So what organs are damaged enough to impair function gives you your diagnosis, the protocol helps repair all the cells of the body, which is why it's applicable to Age Management (some of our patients got to meet Ed Kane, Dr. Kane's husband, who is 85, sharp as a tack, and lectures to physicians in the seminars).

I took my first PK Protocol raining in June and got so much out of the seminar, I will be returning for more training in April. We had the distinct privilege of having Dr. Kane recently spend time in the office, personally training our staff and meeting with some patients (not to mention giving me my first treatment).

I urge you to go pkprotocol.com or BodyBio.com for more information. Or you can come by the office and see my BodyBio report, lab results and treatment plan. Some of the case reports are up on our walls.

The benefits of long-term vitamin C consumption in excess of the U.S. government recommended daily allowance (RDA) are widely acknowledged and include reduced risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease and cataracts. Higher-than-RDA vitamin C intakes have been associated with increases in HDL cholesterol, decreases in LDL cholesterol oxidation, decreased blood pressure and decreased cardiovascular mortality.

The first physician to aggressively use vitamin C to treat disease was Frederick R. Klenner, M.D., beginning in the early 1940s. Dr. Klenner successfully treated chicken pox, measles, mumps, tetanus and polio with huge doses of vitamin C. He used massive doses of vitamin C for more than 40 years of family practice.

Vitamin C is remarkably safe even in enormously high doses. Compared to commonly used prescription drugs, side effects are virtually nonexistent.

How much vitamin C is an effective therapeutic dose? Dr. Klenner administered up to 300,000 milligrams (mg) per day. Generally, he gave 350 to 700 mg per kilogram (2.2 pounds) body weight per day. Dr. Klenner emphasized that small amounts do not work. He said, "If you want results, use adequate ascorbic acid."

Evidence documents Vitamin C as one of the best antiviral agents now available. Vitamin C can neutralize and eliminate a wide range of toxins. Vitamin C will enhance host resistance, greatly augmenting the immune system's ability to neutralize bacterial and fungal infections.

Vitamin C is used to treat the following:
-Alcoholism
-Arthritis
-Atherosclerosis
-Bladder infection
-Burns and secondary infections
-Chronic fatigue
-Common cold
-Complications of surgery
-Corneal ulcer
-Diabetes
-Encephalitis
-Flu
-Glaucoma
-Heat stroke
-Heavy Metal toxicity- lead and mercury
-Hepatitis
-Herpes Simplex
-Herpes Zoster (shingles)
-High cholesterol
-Leukemia
-Lyme disease
-Mononucleosis
-Multiple Sclerosis
-Pancreatitis
-Pneumonia
-Radiation burns
-Ruptured Intervertebral Disc

January is Thyroid Awareness Month. Experts believe as many as 59 million Americans have thyroid problems and the majority don't even know it yet!

According to thyroidawarenessmonth.com:

Your thyroid is actually your master gland of metabolism and energy. And if it's not working properly, you can suffer from a long list of health problems -- everything from weight problems, to fatigue, to high cholesterol, to depression...even a low sex drive!

That's why, if you don't know where your thyroid is, or whether your thyroid is even working properly, you really do need to find out.

And what better time than now?

According to thyroid patient advocate and author Mary Shomon, "Even with the efforts of the past decade, we still have a long way to go in terms of thyroid awareness. People are struggling with obesity, depression, infertility, menopausal symptoms, low libido, high cholesterol, osteoporosis, and many other issues, and yet the majority of Americans have never had a thorough thyroid checkup. If properly informed, diagnosed and treated, some of these people would feel and live well, because they will discover that their symptoms were actually due to overlooked and untreated thyroid problems all along!"

Your Thyroid, and What Can Go Wrong...
Your thyroid is a small gland, located in your neck, and the hormone it produces controls the delivery of oxygen and energy to every cell in your body. You know how without a fuel pump, your car won't go, because gasoline can't get into the engine? Well, if your thyroid isn't functioning properly, YOU won't go, because oxygen and energy can't get into your cells, tissues and organs.

You may have heard the dumb jokes about people with thyroid problems, suggesting that "thyroid" is just a lame excuse for being overweight, but thyroid disease is no joke. Without thyroid hormone, everything -- and we mean everything -- eventually shuts down. The most common problem is insufficient thyroid hormone, known as hypothyroidism, "low thyroid" or an underactive thyroid. Without enough thyroid hormone, you can gain weight, lose energy, become depressed and exhausted, lose your hair and your sex drive, even find it hard to remember things or concentrate.

Sometimes, the thyroid can go into overdrive, and produce too much thyroid hormone, a condition known as hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid. Think of this as a bit like the accelerator's gotten stuck, and the engine gets flooded. With too much thyroid hormone, heart rate and blood pressure can go up, you might experience anxiety, tremors, panic attacks, diarrhea, muscle weakness, eye problems, insomnia and rapid weight loss.

The thyroid can also get enlarged (known as a goiter), develop lumps (known as nodules), and in some cases, those lumps can even be cancerous. Thyroid cancer is, in fact, one of the fastest growing cancers in the United States.

Do You Know That You Should Always Rule Out a Thyroid Problem?
Here are some more Thyroid Awareness Month Tips to help you understand how important your thyroid is to staying healthy and happy.

Thyroid disease is often overlooked, or blamed on things like age and lifestyle, because the symptoms are common. It's actually shocking how often doctors do not test for thyroid, when it could be the cause of symptoms and condition.

For example:
-Overweight, and can't lose weight despite diet and exercise? Before you go for weight loss surgery, you owe it to yourself to rule out a thyroid problem.
-If you are suffering from infertility or recurrent miscarriage, rule out a thyroid problem before you start costly assisted reproduction treatments.

-If you have low sex drive, don't despair...rule out thyroid problems first. Feeling depressed? Before you start an antidepressant -- with all its potential side effects-- rule out thyroid problems.

-If you are feeling fuzzy-brained and having memory problems -- rule out thyroid problems. -High cholesterol? Rule out thyroid before starting a statin drug.

-If you've just had a baby and you're exhausted, losing hair, or having trouble breastfeeding -- rule out thyroid problems before you assume you're having normal "postpartum" problems.

-If you have erratic periods or hot flashes, rule out thyroid problems before you assume it's perimenopause or menopause.

-If you have panic attacks, muscle aches, joint pains, hair loss, puffiness, or constipation -- rule out thyroid problems!

KEY TIP: Don't assume that your annual physical or blood work (you know, the typical bloodwork that looks at cholesterol, etc.) includes complete thyroid tests. Most of the time, no one is looking at your thyroid during an annual check-up, and most bloodwork does NOT include a thyroid panel.

What you can do:
Get a full thyroid panel done to evaluate all the aspects of thyroid health and function.

You can take your morning temperature before you get out of bed for one week and see what your resting temperature is.

You can get a respiratory metabolic test to determine your resting metabolic rate.

Hydrogen Peroxide (H202) Therapy is an Intravenous (IV) therapy that helps in the cellular oxygenation of the body to enhance the immune system. Hydrogen Peroxide delivers oxygen to the body’s cells. This is a key therapy in the prevention and reversal of disease.

Hydrogen Peroxide is produced in abundance by almost every cell in the human body and is involved in many different physiological processes. It is an oxidizer and is essential within the body for the process of life. Hydrogen Peroxide Therapy kills bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and has also been shown to destroy certain tumors.

Hydrogen Peroxide has also been found to dissolve cholesterol and calcium deposits associated with atherosclerosis-- a condition in which fatty material collects along the walls of arteries. Therefore, it is a good treatment for vascular disorders. This can result in the lessening or disappearance of angina-- chest pain or discomfort that occurs when an area of your heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen-rich blood, leg pain and transient ischemic attacks to the brain which causes dizziness. It can also help reverse some of the damage left by a stroke, if treatment is started early enough. Hydrogen Peroxide also clears the lungs, in cases of emphysema, by producing oxygen bubbles in the alveoli (tiny air sacs in the lungs), literally lifting the mucus deposits up, so they can be coughed out.

Hydrogen Peroxide has a remarkable clearing effect on the skin. After only a few IV treatments, the skin takes on a translucent clarity usually seen only in children. In addition, Hydrogen Peroxide benefits asthma, leukemia, multiple sclerosis, degenerative spinal disc disease and high blood pressure. It is particularly effective with asthma, arthritis and back disorders.

Hydrogen Peroxide Therapy is used for the following conditions:
-Acute and chronic bacterial problems
-Acute and chronic viral problems including influenza, Herpes simplex, Herpes zoster, Epstein-Barr and HIV
-Alzheimer ’s disease
-Bronchitis
-Cardiovascular disease
-Cerebral vascular disease
-Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
-Emphysema
-Environmental allergies
-Food allergies
-Fungal or yeast problems, such as systemic candidiasis (Candida), parasites, asthma
-Headaches- Migraine, Cluster, Vascular Chronic Pain Syndromes
-Parkinsonism
-Rheumatoid arthritis
-Pollen allergies
-Sinusitis

I get that question a lot. People see me walking around the office with a container of liquid that's on the greenish-brownish side and they wonder just what it is. Or they quiz my staff.  Surely something that color can't taste good or be fit for human consumption. Can it?

That, my friends, is my power drink.  Many health experts recommend it, and it can go by many names.  Some call it a health drink, but the concept is the same: it is a collection of different substances put together for the purpose of detoxifying and, thereby, giving you greater health and more energy. I will talk about detoxification in greater detail in the future, but for now just let me say, given the polluted state of our environment and food/water supply, we should be doing at least one thing on a daily basis to cleanse our bodies.

So, what goes into a power drink?  There are many formulas and the permutations are endless.  If you have a particular health challenge, it can be customized to suit your needs. The amounts I use are good for me, but you may have to work up to a particular amount depending on how toxic you are and how sensitive your biochemistry is. I'll share what usually goes in my power drink:

Green powder: I put in 3 scoops of green powder. The greens from dried vegetables are very high in chlorophyll and is great for cleansing the cells.  I usually use Gary Null 's Green Stuff.

Red powder: I use 1 scoop.  The reds from dried fruits and vegetables are thought to help repair the DNA that gets damaged, on a daily basis, from a toxic environment (and really, from normal day-to-day living). I use Gary Null's Red Stuff.

Fiber: I use 1scoop.  Fiber is important because it traps things in our intestine that shouldn't be absorbed, helps nourish the flora that is an important part of the intestinal function, and keeps things moving along, shall we say.  The American diet is way too low in fiber; we should be getting 25 grams a day, but 50 would be better.  I use Beyond Fiber by Longevity Plus.

Protein: I use 1-2 scoops.  I usually use a rice or whey protein.  Adequate protein intake is very important since the body uses protein as part of the detoxification biochemistry.  That is why a prolonged fast without protein is not healthy--you break down your muscle tissue to process the toxins being excreted from the body.  Metagenics BioPure is my favorite whey protein.

Medical Food: I use 1-2 scoops.  A medical food is a specially designed product to help your organs safely process the toxins and get them out of the body.  There are many different formulations with different combinations on macro and micro nutrients.  This part is an area where you really may have to start low (maybe 1/4 of a scoop or even less) and slowly titrate up, depending on how sensitive your system is and your total toxic load (total body burden). I use one of the UltraClear formulations by Metagenics.

Chlorella: I typically use 1 teaspoon, as I still have some mercury stores from 11 amalgam fillings I had at one time (long since replaced by a biological dentist). I use Jarrow Formulas.

Creatine:  1 teaspoon or about 5 grams.  It's good for the brain and the muscles. It brings water to the inside of the cells in those places, and that's where you want most of your water to be.

Vitamin C:  I use 1-3 teaspoons of a buffered Vitamin C powder.  Vitamin C is a great detoxifier, but a non-buffered form can lead to bloating and gas.  I usually use Gary Null’s Suprema C, but sometimes I’ll use the Longevity Plus BioEnergy C.

Probiotics:  I will occasionally use powdered probiotics to help promotes a healthy GI flora.  Many brands need to be refrigerated.  I typically use Ultra Dolphulis & Ultra Bifidus by Metagenics.

From time to time I'll add other things, more for variety usually.  Right now I add a scoop of acai powder, but when the container is finished I'll probably add something else.  I mention the brands that I use because it is extremely important to use good quality products that do quality control, especially when we are dealing with concentrates.  There was a report in the news not too long ago where they tested protein supplements that you would find at the typical commercial nutrition store.  Lead contamination was found in most of the products.  It would be better if the green and red portions came from freshly juiced fruits and vegetables, but most people's schedules don't allow for that.

Ok, I know you've been wondering, “How does it taste?”  Let me say first that I have been blessed with a palate that would probably allow me to drink liquefied cement without a problem. As a matter of fact, the early protein powders tasted just like that.  So I usually don't add anything for taste, but you sure can.  A little stevia or xylitol will go a long way to make it more pleasurable. I believe my formula provides roughly 300 calories, so it can be used to replace a meal or it can be sipped throughout the day.

So, that's my recipe.  If you find something that you like to add to your power drink, let me know. I'm always looking for good ideas.

Bath and shower products, as part of the $50-billion personal care products industry, have become big business in the United States.
Indeed, from the looks of ads, enticing aromatic soaps and gels have clearly become part of that invigorating daily shower or relaxing hot bath experience.

But have you ever glimpsed at the label of that fragrantly silky gel you're splashing over your hands and body or that bar of soap that promises to keep you smelling great all day long?

Do you really know what's in those products you're slathering over your body? Do you know if those ingredients are safe?

If I were to tell you that your shower and bath products could be putting you at risk for less-than-optimal skin and eye health, immune and endocrine function, and possibly even cancer, would you pay a little more attention to your products' ingredients?

When you or a family member bathe or shower with questionably safe products, you risk…

...Exposing highly sensitive mucous membranes
...Inhaling ingredient fumes and irritating your lungs
...Accidentally swallowing potentially toxic ingredients
...Absorption through your skin, your largest organ
...Contact with your eyes

Did you know that applying a substance to your skin isn't much different from eating it? And let's not forget… a hot steaming shower…

What's In Your Bottle of Shower Gel and Liquid Hand Soap?
Take a second and grab a bottle of your liquid hand soap or shower gel. Most have the same basic six groups of ingredients to provide effective cleansing, lathering and moisturizing. These six groups of ingredients include:

Water
Typically the main ingredient listed in bath and shower gels. Functions as the liquid solvent for the other ingredients.

Emulsifiers
Act to increase foam and provide thickening for bath gels, giving them their gel-like consistency.

Detergents
Used to clean the skin.

Surfactants
Create a lather or foam when the bath gel or liquid soap is applied to the skin.

Preservatives
Extend the shelf life of bath gels and liquid soaps and prevent microbial contamination.

Fragrance
Most shower gels contain fragrance to cover up the chemical smell of other ingredients and to help make using the shower gel a pleasing experience. Most fragrances used in shower gels are synthetic. Some may be derived from essential oils and natural plant extracts.
